Paper on Stress Drop Variations in the Sea of Marmara Region

Xiang Chen published a paper ‘Stress Drop Variations of (A)Seismic Fault Segments in the Sea of Marmara Region (Northwestern Türkiye) Supported by Different Methodological Approaches’ in Journal of Geophysical Research – Solid Earth. The study investigates the characteristics of small to moderate earthquakes in the Sea of Marmara region in northwestern Türkiye, an area known for a fault system that displays a mix of behaviors, from slow, creeping movements to fully locked sections that build up stress until a major earthquake occurs. A key focus is on the static stress drop that is calculated using two methodologies. Both methods produced consistent results, which revealed subtle but important differences in stress levels along various parts of the fault.
