Xiang Chen published another paper entitled “Rupture Directivity of Moderate Earthquakes Along the Main Marmara Fault Suggests Larger Ground Motion Towards Istanbul”, this time in the Geophysical Research Letters. In the paper, she calculates rupture directivity of 31 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging 3.5-5.7 recorded in the Sea of Marmara Region using empirical Green’s function technique. She analyses variations in apparent source time function as a function of observation azimuth finding that over 70% of earthquakes display directivity towards the east. This implies higher ground motions towards the Istanbul metropolitan area.
